Three Things You Need To Do When Moving A Data Center

Posted on: 25 March 2018

If you need to move a data center, you are going to need to make sure that you are very careful with how you move the equipment. You are going to need to hire a company that has experience with moving technology to help you move the equipment.

Label All the Cords

When you move a data center, you are going to be moving a lot of cords. Literally every set of cords should be labeled. The best way to label a cord is to do so when it is still attached to the machine in question. Put a sticker on the machine that labels the number and name of the machine, and then put a corresponding sticker on the cords for that machine. If there are multiple sets of cords for a machine, label the cords 1 out of 3, or however many cords exist for that machine.

Bundle Up the Cords

Next, you want to bundle up the cords. You can wrap up the cords and use zip ties to keep the cords together. Or you can put each set of cords inside of a zip lock bag. Just be sure to label the bags.

You don't want to keep the cords wrapped up for long, so be sure to quickly set up the equipment when you get to its new home.

Label Where Each Piece of Equipment Should Go

Next, you are going to want to make sure that you label where each piece of equipment should go. If you are moving to a large data center, you are going to want to secure a layout of the new data center as well as the name or designation for each room in the data center. Things will be a lot less chaotic if you know where each machine is supposed to go when it gets to its new location.

Get Rid of Old Machines Before Moving Day

If you have any machines that will not be making the move with you, you are going to want to make sure that you get rid of that machinery before moving day. Arrange to have that equipment picked up and properly recycled before your moving day. That way, you don't have to deal with getting rid of and moving equipment on the same day. This will also make it easier and faster for the moving team to grab and move all the equipment that needs to go.
